Editor Notes
Dear Readers,
As Haïtiennes in the Diaspora, we need to begin to document our lives. We need publications that address our unique, specific interests, and issues. For a long time, I have observed newsstands and Haitian homes and wonder why, there are not publications that speak to Haïtienne, and address their cultural issues and the conflicts they face, while celebrating their accomplishments. Too often, many people see Haitienne images that do not highlight the best that Haitienne has to offer.
Haïtiennes in North America on a daily basis struggle to overcome and sometimes succumb to the challenges of straddling the cultures of two vastly different countries. Wherever we find our Haïtienne women congregated, we find these challenges of contention discussed in conversations.
The aspiration of this unique publication is to highlight the interests, accomplishments, and lifestyle of the Haitienne in North America, Haiti, and around the world. It will be a fierce supporter of the needs and rights of Haitian women as they endeavor to succeed in their new homelands. This publication will speak to Haïtiennes in North America, and back home about beauty, fashion, lifestyle and culture, while maintaining their heritage as they undertake the quest, to redefine Haïtiennes. At the core of this publication, we will be bridging the culture gaps and tug of wars that are taking place between the traditional and the modern Haïtiennes as they chart their destiny and those of future generations.
We decided to launch “Haïtienne” to take these conversations public and draw from the experiences of Haïtiennes in North America and Haiti, to share their own stories of success and failure; to share their beauty and complexity; and unabashedly discuss issues that will jostle their very cores while at the same time, acknowledging the importance of our heritage. We also decided that portions of the proceeds from this magazine would help fund projects in Haiti to eradicate illiteracy, malnutrition and deforestation.
We hope that you join us in making the Haïtiennes website your premier website of choice for information on Haïtiennes beauty, fashion, lifestyle and culture. Finally, we hope that you will help us introduce Haïtiennes to your friends and family and the rest of the world.
